When Were QR Codes Invented? The History and Anatomy of the QR Code

QR codes were invented in 1994 in Japan by Masahiro Hara and his team at Denso Wave, a subsidiary of Denso Corporation in the Toyota group. Hara built them to solve a real problem on the assembly line: the barcodes used to track car parts held only about 20 characters and often needed several scans to read a single part. His code scanned faster and held far more data, and that speed gave it its name, QR for “Quick Response.”

How the QR code was invented

In the early 1990s, Denso Wave was making parts for the automotive industry, and the barcodes on the assembly line couldn't keep up. A standard barcode holds only about 20 characters, so workers often had to scan several codes just to track one component. Masahiro Hara, an engineer at the company, set out to design something that could hold far more information and be read much faster.

The three squares you see in the corners were the breakthrough. Hara has said their design came partly from the black-and-white patterns of the board game Go, and they let a scanner find the code and orient it from any angle. Because the code was so quick to read, the team named it the QR Code, short for “Quick Response.” Denso Wave patented the design but kept the specification open and free to use, which is a big reason it caught on.

    Apple's iOS 11 lets the iPhone's built-in Camera app read a QR code with no extra app, removing the biggest hurdle to everyday use.

    During the COVID-19 period around 2020, contactless check-ins, payments, event tickets, and product packaging push QR codes into mainstream daily life.

That blocky black-and-white pattern isn't random. Every part of a QR code's layout has a job, and once you know what each piece does, the whole thing makes a lot more sense.

Every QR code shares this same skeleton. The three corner squares and the timing line are what let a camera lock on in a fraction of a second, from almost any angle.

Finder patterns

These are the three large squares in the corners. They let a scanner instantly spot the code and figure out its orientation, using a distinctive dark-to-light ratio that rarely appears anywhere else.

Alignment patterns

These are smaller squares placed inside the code. They keep it readable when it's tilted, warped, or printed on a curved surface like a bottle or a coffee cup.

Timing patterns

This is the single line of alternating dark and light squares running between the finder patterns. It tells the scanner how big each module, or cell, is, so it can map out the grid correctly.

Quiet zone

This is the empty margin around the outside of the code. Without that clear border, scanners struggle to tell where the code ends and the background begins.

Data modules

These are the small dark and light squares that fill most of the code. This is the part that actually stores your link, text, or other information.

Format & version information

These are small reserved areas near the finder patterns. They tell the scanner the error-correction level, the mask pattern, and how large the grid is, so it can decode everything else correctly.

A traditional barcode stores data in a single row of lines, so it holds very little and has to be scanned in one direction. A QR code uses a full grid instead, which lets it carry far more information, read from any angle, and even survive some damage thanks to built-in error correction.
