Technical QR code formats

QR Code Formats: From Model 2 to Frame QR

Behind every QR code is a technical format — defined by the ISO/IEC 18004 standard — that determines its size, data capacity, and scanning reliability. First invented by DENSO WAVE in 1994, QR codes have since evolved into multiple formats. Understanding these formats helps you choose the right foundation for your QR codes.

Model 1 QR Code

The original 1994 format created by DENSO WAVE with limited capacity (~41 characters) and a fixed 21×21 module grid. Model 1 lacks alignment patterns, making it unreliable when printed on curved surfaces. Rarely used in modern applications — Model 2 is superior in every way. You may encounter Model 1 in legacy manufacturing and early automotive part-tracking systems.

Legacy — Avoid

Model 2 QR Code (Standard)

The most common format, used in 99% of QR codes today. Supports versions 1–40 (21×21 to 177×177 modules), up to 7,089 numeric characters, and four error correction levels (L/M/Q/H). Model 2 introduced alignment patterns for reliable scanning even on curved or partially obscured surfaces. Every major smartphone camera app supports it natively. QRKIT defaults to Model 2 for all generated codes.

Recommended

Micro QR Code

A smaller, simplified format for space-constrained applications. Supports up to 35 numeric characters with versions M1–M4 (11×11 to 17×17 modules). Uses only one finder pattern instead of three, saving space. Best for jewelry tags, small electronic component labels, tiny product markings, and industrial parts where standard QR codes are too large. Not all smartphone cameras support Micro QR natively — test before deploying.

Space-critical

iQR Code

Supports rectangular shapes instead of squares, allowing custom aspect ratios (2:1, 3:1). Introduced by DENSO WAVE around 2015, iQR can hold the same data as Model 2 in a narrower footprint. Ideal for bottle labels, long narrow surfaces, and packaging where a square QR code doesn’t fit. Note: requires an iQR-compatible scanner — most standard smartphone cameras cannot decode iQR natively.

Rectangular

SQRC (Secure QR Code)

Adds a layer of encryption and authentication to QR codes for secure transactions and document verification. SQRC stores both public data (readable by any scanner) and private data (accessible only with an authorized decoder). Used in banking, legal documents, secure event ticketing, supply chain anti-counterfeiting, and government ID verification. Requires a proprietary DENSO WAVE decoder.

Authentication

Frame QR Code

Allows a decorative border or frame around the QR code while maintaining scannability. Supports logo overlay in the center and custom color schemes that align with your brand identity. Frame QR leverages the high error correction of Model 2 to tolerate the visual obstructions. Perfect for branded marketing materials, event branding, product packaging, and augmented reality initiators where visual appeal matters as much as functionality.

Brand marketing

Note: rMQR (Rectangular Micro QR) is a newer rectangular variant of Micro QR for specialized uses. Extremely rare — most users won't encounter it.

Static vs dynamic

Static vs. Dynamic QR Codes: Which Should You Use?

The most important decision when creating a QR code isn't the type — it's whether to make it static or dynamic. This choice affects editability, analytics, code size, and long-term flexibility.

A static QR code encodes data directly into the code pattern. Once printed, the destination cannot be changed. A dynamic QR code stores a short redirect URL that points to your destination — so you can update where the code leads, track how many times it's scanned, see which devices and locations scans come from, and run A/B tests, all without reprinting the physical code. Most businesses benefit from dynamic QR codes for campaigns, menus, and any content that changes over time.

Use Static QR if:

  • Destination is permanent and won't change
  • You don't need scan analytics
  • You want zero dependencies (no backend)
  • Target audience has limited internet

Use Dynamic QR if:

  • You're running a marketing campaign
  • You need to track scan analytics
  • Destination URL might change
  • You want A/B testing capability
  • You're updating content frequently

Decision framework

How to Choose the Right QR Code Type

With 20+ different QR code types available, choosing the right one can feel overwhelming. Follow this four-step decision framework to match your goal to the right format — whether you're running a marketing campaign, sharing contact info, or distributing documents.

Step 1

Define Your Goal

What action do you want users to take after scanning? Visit a website → URL QR. Save contact info → vCard. Join Wi-Fi → Wi-Fi QR. Download something → PDF or App QR. Navigate → Location QR.

Step 2

Choose Technical Format

In 99% of cases, use Model 2 QR Code (the standard). Only choose Micro QR for severe space constraints (jewelry, tiny labels) or Frame QR if you want a decorative border with logo overlay.

Step 3

Static or Dynamic?

Use static if the destination is permanent and you don’t need analytics. Use dynamic if you might change the URL later, need scan tracking, or are running a time-sensitive campaign.

Step 4

Test & Optimize

Generate your QR code free with QRKIT. Test scanning on multiple devices (iPhone, Android). If using dynamic QR, monitor scan analytics and optimize placement for conversions.

Questions to Ask Yourself

  • 1Will the destination change? If yes, use Dynamic QR.
  • 2Do I need analytics? If yes, use Dynamic QR.
  • 3Is space constrained? If yes, consider Micro QR.
  • 4Is branding important? If yes, use Frame QR + Dynamic.
  • 5What action should users take? Match the QR type to the desired action (URL, vCard, Wi-Fi, etc.).

Multi-type strategy

Why Use Multiple QR Code Types

Most businesses don't need just one QR code — they need a multi-type strategy. Different touchpoints call for different QR types, and using the right type for each context reduces friction, improves user experience, and drives measurably better conversion rates. Here's why a diverse QR strategy outperforms a one-size-fits-all approach.

01

Omnichannel Marketing

Different touchpoints need different QR types. Use URL QR on digital ads, vCard QR on business cards, and Wi-Fi QR at physical locations for a cohesive multi-channel strategy.

02

Personalized User Experience

Match the QR type to the user’s context. A restaurant uses a Menu QR — not a generic URL. A networking event uses vCard — not a link to a contact page.

03

Reduced Friction

vCard QR auto-saves a contact in one scan. URL QR to a contact page requires navigating and copying. The right QR type eliminates unnecessary steps.

04

Better Analytics

Dynamic QR types provide scan metrics — who scanned, when, where, and on what device. Track which QR types drive the most conversions across campaigns.

05

Flexibility & Agility

Dynamic QR codes: print once, update forever. Swap destinations by season, campaign, or performance. No reprinting, no waste, no downtime.

Real-World Example: A Hotel's Multi-Type QR Strategy

  • Business Cards: Digital business card with vCard QR for instant contact save
  • Lobby: Wi-Fi QR for guest internet access
  • Rooms: Menu QR for restaurant, Event QR for spa booking
  • Marketing: Dynamic URL QR pointing to seasonal promotions
  • Social Media: Social QR linking to Instagram
  • Support: Email QR for guest support requests

Each QR type is optimized for its context — reducing friction and improving guest experience across every touchpoint.
