How it works
What Is a WiFi QR Code?
A WiFi QR code stores your network name, password, and encryption type in a scannable format. When someone scans it with their phone camera (iPhone or Android), their device automatically connects to your WiFi network, no manual typing required.
Encoded format
WIFI:S:<network name>;T:<encryption>;P:<password>;;This is an open standard supported by all modern smartphones. iPhone users running iOS 11 or later and Android users can scan WiFi QR codes directly from the built-in camera app.
Privacy
Your WiFi Password Stays Private
Your WiFi QR code is generated entirely in your browser. Your network name and password are never sent to our servers, the code is just a visual encoding of details you already have, like writing them on a card. It also never expires: a static WiFi QR code keeps working as long as the password in it matches your real WiFi password.
Need to change the password later without reprinting? Use a dynamic QR code and update it from your dashboard.
Which to pick
WiFi Security Protocols: WPA, WPA2, WEP or None
When you create your WiFi QR code, you pick an encryption type. Here is which one to choose.
WPA (most common)
Pick the WPA option for nearly all modern home and business networks. It covers WPA, WPA2, and WPA3, and it is what almost everyone needs.
WEP (older networks)
Only for very old routers that do not support WPA. WEP is outdated and insecure, so upgrade your router if you can.
No password (open network)
Only for open networks that have no password.
Not sure? Pick WPA, it covers the vast majority of networks. For added safety, share a separate guest network rather than your main one.
Use cases
Who Uses WiFi QR Codes?
Restaurants & Cafes
Print your WiFi QR code on table tents, menus, or near the counter. Guests connect without asking staff for the password, and you avoid shouting it across the room. Change your password anytime without reprinting if you use a dynamic QR code.
Airbnb & Vacation Rentals
Place a WiFi QR code in your welcome guide or on a small card near the router. Guests appreciate not having to type a 20-character password on arrival. It's one of the easiest ways to improve your guest rating.
Offices & Coworking Spaces
Give visitors and clients quick WiFi access without sharing your internal network password verbally. Print the QR code at reception or in meeting rooms. For security, use a separate guest network.
Events & Conferences
Display a large WiFi QR code on screens or banners. Hundreds of attendees can connect simultaneously without anyone needing to spell out the password. Pair with an event QR code so attendees can also add sessions to their calendar.
Hotels & Hospitality
Place WiFi QR codes in rooms, lobbies, and common areas. Guests scan and connect in seconds, with no need to call the front desk or type a room-specific code.
Schools & Libraries
Post WiFi QR codes in study areas and classrooms. Students and visitors connect without IT support, and you can rotate the password on a schedule using a dynamic QR code.
Benefits
Why Share Your WiFi with a QR Code?
No More Password Hassle
Stop spelling out long passwords to every guest. A single scan connects them automatically. Works especially well when your password is complex (which it should be for security).
Works on Every Phone
WiFi QR codes are natively supported on iPhones (iOS 11+) and all Android devices. No special app required, the built-in camera handles it.
Change Password Without Reprinting
With a dynamic WiFi QR code, you can update the stored password anytime from your QRKIT dashboard. The same printed QR code will always point to the current credentials. This is unique to dynamic QR codes, because static codes are locked once created.
Keep Your Network Secure
Sharing a QR code is more secure than posting your password on a whiteboard. You control who sees the code, and with a dynamic code, you can disable access at any time.
Track How Many People Connect
Dynamic WiFi QR codes show you scan analytics, including how many people connected, when they scanned, and from what devices. Track your WiFi QR code scans to understand foot traffic patterns.
Compare
Static vs Dynamic WiFi QR Codes
Which should you choose? It depends on whether you need to update your WiFi credentials after printing.
Static WiFi QR Code
FreeThe WiFi credentials are encoded directly in the QR code. It works forever and doesn't need an internet connection to function. Downside: if you change your WiFi password, you need to generate and print a new QR code. Create free static WiFi QR codes with our free QR code generator, no account needed.
Best for
Home use, one-time events, personal sharing.
Dynamic WiFi QR Code
PopularA dynamic QR code points to a redirect that you control from your QRKIT dashboard. You can change the WiFi password, network name, or encryption type anytime, and the printed QR code stays the same. You also get scan analytics (total scans, devices, dates).
Best for
Businesses, Airbnbs, restaurants, offices, anywhere you rotate passwords.
Print it
How to Print Your WiFi QR Code

- Table cards and tents: print at least 3cm x 3cm (1.2 in) for scanning from about 30cm away.
- Posters and signage: go 10cm x 10cm (4 in) or larger for across-the-room scanning.
- Always test-scan the printed copy from a realistic distance before a full print run.
