Chrome can already turn the page you’re on into a QR code. Here’s where to find it, what it costs, why there’s a dinosaur in the middle of it, and when you need a full QR code generator for Google Chrome instead.
Is Chrome QR code free?
Yes. Chrome’s built-in “Create QR code” option ships with the browser and costs nothing. QRKit is free here too: the extension is free to install, and creating a QR code — logo, colors and frame included — is free. Downloading the image file needs a free QRKit account, and unlimited scans start on the Starter plan.
Where do I find the Google QR code?
Open the page you want to share in Chrome, then choose More → “Cast, save, and share” → “Create QR code”. Google’s support page documents three things you can do next: copy the QR link, download the code, or scan it with another device’s camera.
Why does my QR code have a dinosaur in it?
Because it was made with Chrome’s built-in “Create QR code” option. Chrome puts a dinosaur — the same character it shows on its offline error page — in the middle of every code that option makes, and it also draws the code with round dots rather than square ones. So a dinosaur in the centre is a reliable sign the code came out of Chrome rather than a QR code generator you picked. The dinosaur is decoration sitting on top of the finished code: it carries none of the link, and Chrome offers no setting to change or remove it.
Does the dinosaur stop the QR code from working?
No. QR codes carry error correction, which lets a scanner rebuild the modules hidden underneath a centre image, so Chrome’s code still scans with the dinosaur on top of it. That same headroom is what lets you put your own logo in the middle of a QRKit code instead of Google’s dinosaur — you choose the image, Chrome gives you no say at all. Whichever tool you use, scan-test a code with a centre image yourself before you commit it to a print run.
Can I create a Chrome QR code without the dinosaur?
Chrome gives you nothing to change it with. Google’s support page documents only three actions for a built-in code — copy the QR link, download the code, or scan it with another device’s camera — and no design settings at all. To control what sits in the middle, generate the code in QRKit instead, where you choose the logo, colors and frame yourself.
