Honest review
QR.io Review: Pricing, the Free Plan, and Is QR.io Legit?
By the QRKit team · Last updated July 2026
QR.io — also typed as qr io or qr code io — is a QR code generator with an unusual commercial shape. Instead of a ladder of plans it sells one unlimited tier, and instead of a permanent free plan it offers a 7-day trial. That single design decision explains most of what people search for about it, so this page deals with the three questions that actually get asked: what it costs, whether you can use it free, and what to make of its public reviews.
We build QRKit ourselves, so treat this as an informed-but-interested review. We have set out below exactly which QR.io figures come from their own published pricing page and which we could not verify at all, so you can discount our opinion and keep the facts.
The short version
Should You Use QR.io?
QR.io may suit you if…
You need a genuinely large number of dynamic codes and you would rather pay one flat price than count them. Their plan is advertised as unlimited codes and unlimited scans for $39.99 a month, and if you would otherwise be buying a high tier elsewhere, one unlimited price can work out simpler. Five team members are included, where QRKit's entry plan includes one.
Look at QRKit if…
You want to keep using something for free after the first week, or your volume is ordinary. QRKit has a permanent free plan — 1 dynamic code and 100 scans a month — and an entry plan with unlimited scans at $8 a month, or $6 a month billed yearly, against QR.io's $39.99 a month (about $29 a month if you prepay $350 for 12 months). If you need a handful of codes rather than hundreds, the unlimited pricing is money spent on headroom you will not use. QRKit also exports true-vector PDF and EPS for print from the dashboard, on any paid plan.
QR.io's figures on this page were read from their own published pricing page on 28 July 2026. QRKit's figures come from our live plan configuration. Both products change and pricing moves, so confirm current details on each site before you commit.
The question everyone actually searches
Is QR.io Legit?
QR.io is a real, operating product rather than a site that does not exist. It runs a live service at qr.io, publishes its prices openly, and maintains listings on Trustpilot, G2, ProductHunt, Slashdot and Crunchbase. Codes made with it are ordinary QR codes and scan with any phone camera. Whatever you conclude about the company, you are not looking at a vanished website.
Public opinion about it is genuinely divided, and we are not going to flatten that in either direction — or summarise it for you. We sell a competing product, so we are the last people whose characterisation of another company's reputation you should rely on. Read the listings above directly, along with any forum threads you find, and draw your own conclusion from the primary sources rather than from us.
What we can and cannot tell you
The verifiable part is the commercial model, taken from their own pricing page: QR.io has no permanent free tier. It offers everything free for seven days, then $39.99 a month, with a 7-day money-back guarantee.
Our own reading of that, offered as opinion rather than fact: any trial-led model raises cancellation and renewal questions that a free-plan model does not, simply because more people arrive expecting a free tool and then meet a renewal date. That is a property of the pricing shape, not a claim about how QR.io operates — and since we sell a competing product, it is not a judgment you should take from us anyway.
How to check a QR platform before you enter a card
These apply to us as much as to anyone else.
- Find the price before you find the signup button
- QR.io does publish its pricing openly, which is a point in its favour. A tool that hides the number until after you have built something is the one to be wary of.
- Establish whether the free offer is a plan or a trial
- This is where most QR disputes begin. A permanent free plan still exists next month. A 7-day trial does not, and the two get described with the same word.
- Know whether your codes are static or dynamic
- Static codes survive a cancelled account because the destination is baked into the pattern. Dynamic codes stop resolving when the subscription does.
- Read the primary sources, not one summary
- That includes this page. We build a competing product, so read Trustpilot, G2, ProductHunt and the forum threads directly and form your own view.
Trial, not plan
Can You Use QR.io for Free?
Only for seven days. QR.io's pricing page describes a 7-day free trial that opens up the premium features, during which you can create both dynamic and static codes. It is a trial with an end date, not a free plan that continues indefinitely. This is the single most important thing to understand before you start, and it is the difference that most of the confusion around the product rests on.
One part of the trial does persist. Their pricing page states that static QR codes continue to work after the free trial expires, which is consistent with how static codes behave everywhere: the destination lives inside the pattern, so the code does not depend on anyone's server. Dynamic codes are the ones with an expiry risk, because they resolve through the provider's short link.
For contrast, QRKit's free plan is permanent rather than timed: 1 dynamic code with 100 scans a month, unlimited static codes, and a 30-day scan history. It is deliberately small — one code, not ten — so if you need several trackable codes at no cost, neither tool is a good fit and you should look at platforms with a more generous free dynamic tier, such as QRCodeChimp.
Neither tool lets you download without an account
QR.io's own site states that to download your QR code you need to create a free account. QRKit works the same way: you can design and customise a code for free, but every download path requires a free account. We are flagging this because it is a contrast we cannot honestly draw — if you were hoping to grab a file without signing up anywhere, neither of these is the answer.

QR.io Pricing
QR.io publishes one paid product with two billing periods, which makes it unusually simple to summarise. There is no cheaper entry tier below this and no permanent free tier beneath it.
Monthly
$39.99 /mo
Billed every month. Unlimited QR codes.
Annual
$350 /12 months
Presented as a discount from $479, labelled “Best Value”.
Both billing periods are listed with the same feature set: unlimited QR codes, unlimited scans, PNG and SVG downloads, static and dynamic codes, custom landing pages, scan statistics, API access, bulk creation, 5 team members, and a 7-day money-back guarantee.
For reference, QRKit's published pricing starts at $6 a month billed yearly, or $8 month-to-month, for 12 dynamic codes with unlimited scans. It rises to $16 a month billed yearly — $19 month-to-month — for 200 codes, and to $37 a month billed annually for 600 codes on Pro, which is sold on annual billing only. The two products are priced for different customers rather than competing head-on: QR.io asks a single high price for unlimited headroom, and QRKit asks a low price for a bounded number of codes. Which is cheaper depends entirely on how many codes you genuinely need.

Giving them their due
Where QR.io Is the Better Choice
A review that finds nothing good in the competitor is a sales page wearing a costume, so here is the honest case for them.
- Unlimited really is unlimited on codes. Above roughly 600 dynamic codes, QR.io's flat $39.99 a month beats laddered pricing outright: our next step up is $89 a month for 1,200 codes. Below that the gap is narrower than it looks — 600 codes on QRKit Pro is $37 a month — and if you prepay a year QR.io works out at about $29 a month, which undercuts Pro. Either way, QRKit's headroom means moving up a plan and still counting codes.
- Five team members on the paid plan. QRKit's Starter and Plus plans are single-seat; three seats arrive at $37 and five at $89. If you are a small team rather than one person, that is a real difference in their favour.
- Pricing is published in the open. You can see the whole cost before you create an account, which is not universal in this category.
- One decision instead of five. A single tier removes the question of which plan you need and whether you will outgrow it. Some people will happily pay a premium for that.
Our side of it
Where QRKit Fits Better
- There is still something free next month. A permanent free plan with 1 dynamic code and 100 scans a month is small, but it does not expire, so nothing goes dark because a trial ended.
- Ordinary volume costs ordinary money. $8 a month, or $6 a month billed yearly, for 12 dynamic codes with unlimited scans — against QR.io's $39.99 a month, or about $29 a month if you prepay 12 months at $350. If you need a dozen codes rather than a thousand, the unlimited plan is headroom you are paying for and not using.
- True-vector files for print. The dashboard exports PDF and EPS as real vectors alongside SVG, which matters when artwork goes to a commercial printer. QR.io lists PNG and SVG.
- Downloads are never watermarked. On every plan including the free one, the file you download is clean. Free dynamic codes show a “Powered by QRKit” interstitial on the scan page, not on the image.
QR.io — Frequently Asked Questions
The bottom line
Decide on the pricing model, not the rumours
QR.io is a working product with open pricing and a divided set of public reviews you should read for yourself. The concrete thing to settle before you sign up is simpler than its reputation: it is a 7-day trial rather than a free plan, and after that it is $39.99 a month for unlimited codes. If that matches your volume, it is a reasonable buy. If you need a handful of codes, or something that stays free after the first week, start smaller.
