Static vs dynamic
A Garment Is Printed Once. Its Destination Shouldn't Be.
This is the one decision that is genuinely irreversible. Once a code is on a shirt, the artwork is fixed forever — you cannot recall the garment to change where it points. A dynamic code encodes a short redirect you control, so the campaign, the drop, the profile or the product page behind it can change for years afterwards. A static code bakes the destination straight into the modules, and when that destination dies, the garment's code dies with it.

Why Fabric Is Harder Than Paper
A QR code is read as a grid of hard-edged light and dark squares. Paper holds that grid. Fabric attacks it in four separate ways, and they stack — which is why garment codes fail more often than anyone expects.
1. Ink wicks along the weave
Direct-to-garment inkjet lays ink into the fibres rather than on top of them, and the fibres carry it sideways. Module edges soften and the light gaps between dark modules narrow. The smaller the module, the more of it the wicking eats.
2. The garment is not a plane
Cloth drapes, curves over the body and folds. Scanners tolerate mild perspective, but a code that crosses a fold, a seam, a zip, a button placket or a pocket edge has a broken module grid and is unrecoverable.
3. Weave and pile scatter the edges
Smooth flat-woven cotton and poly blends hold detail well. Ribbed knit, fleece and terry do not — the pile stands proud of the print, blurs the module boundaries and lowers effective contrast before the phone even sees it.
4. The garment colour IS the background
On paper you choose the background. On a garment the fabric supplies it. Printing dark modules onto a mid or dark shirt destroys the contrast the scanner needs, and no design setting fixes that — it is a garment-choice or an underbase decision.
The practical consequence: a garment code needs to be physically larger than the same code on card, because every one of these effects hurts the smallest modules first. Our QR code size guide has the printed dimensions and the quiet-zone maths — start there and size up for the fabric.

How Each Garment Printing Method Renders the Modules
The method your printer uses decides how sharp the modules can be, how small the code can go, and which file you need to send. This is the part most QR guides skip.

Which file do you actually get? In the generator on this page, SVG is the vector download — that is the one to hand a screen printer or a vinyl cutter. The create-flow PDF is a raster image inside a PDF wrapper, so don't send that for vector work. Embroidery
Can a QR Code Be Embroidered?
Yes. Embroidered QR codes are made and sold commercially, most often as patches, and there is a whole cottage industry of machine-embroidery tutorials and digitising services around them. But they are the least forgiving way to put a code on cloth, and they fail for a specific, predictable reason.
Stitch density is the resolution limit
A module has to be built from several stitches to read as a clean square. Fewer than that and it reads as a blob or a gap — so the module size, and therefore the whole code, has a much higher floor than any printed method.
Thread sheen works against you
Embroidery thread is reflective and sits proud of the base fabric. Both effects soften module boundaries and can throw highlights that a camera reads as light where you meant dark.
Sew out a sample. Always.
Scan the actual stitched piece, on more than one phone, before you commit to a run. A digitised preview on screen tells you nothing about whether thread and fabric will read.

Where to Put the Code on the Garment
Placement matters more on clothing than on any other printed surface, because most of a garment isn't flat and most of it moves. Find the flattest, stillest panel you have.

Colour & contrast
Fabric Colour Is a Scannability Decision
A scanner finds a QR code by locating hard light/dark boundaries. On a garment, the light half of that equation is usually the fabric itself — so picking the shirt is picking half the code.
Light garment, dark code
The safe default. A dark code on white, cream, light grey or pastel cotton gives the scanner exactly the contrast it expects, with no extra print layer.
Dark garment? Print a light panel
Print a solid light rectangle behind the code — big enough to include the quiet-zone margin — and put the dark code on top. This is more reliable than tinting the code into the artwork.
Inverting is a gamble
A light code on dark fabric works for many scanners, but on textured cloth the light ink and dark fabric bleed into each other and read rates drop. If you go this way, test on the real garment first.
Keep the quiet zone genuinely quiet, too. Surrounding artwork, slogans, stripes or a busy all-over print crowding the code's margin is one of the most common reasons a garment code won't read. Wash & wear
Will It Still Scan After Washing?
Maybe not, and this is the honest answer nobody selling QR t-shirts gives you. Unlike a poster, a garment gets flexed, abraded, washed and tumble-dried, and every printing method degrades under that in its own way.
Plastisol screen prints and HTV crack
Both sit on top of the fabric as a film. Repeated flexing and hot drying put fine cracks across the print, and cracks that fall between modules turn a clean square into two half-squares.
DTG fades
Ink absorbed into the fibres washes out gradually. Contrast drops before anything looks obviously wrong, and the code gets harder to read in poor light long before it looks worn.
Level Q buys tolerance, not immunity
Every QRKIT code is generated at error-correction level Q, which recovers roughly a quarter of the code's data. That absorbs a surprising amount of cracking and fading — but it is a budget, and heavy degradation spends it.
Test a washed sample, not a fresh one
Wash and dry one finished garment a few times the way a customer would, then scan it again. If it survives that, the run will hold up in the real world.
One more reason to go dynamic: if a design does start failing in the field, you can at least see it in the data. A sudden drop in scans on a code you know is out there is a signal. Scan analytics are included on every plan, including Free.

How to Put a QR Code on a Shirt
Create, design, export, proof. The first three take about five minutes; the fourth is the one people skip and regret.

Create a Dynamic Code
In the generator above, pick a dynamic type — URL, link page, vCard, file or a social profile. Dynamic means the destination stays editable long after the garment is printed.
Step 2
Set Colours for the Fabric
Set the foreground, background and corner-eye colours against the garment you're actually printing on, and add a logo if you want one. Design options are free at creation.
Step 3
Export the Right File
Download SVG — the vector output in the create flow — for screen printing, vinyl cutting or handing to a digitiser. If your print shop asks specifically for EPS, use the dashboard download dialog, which produces true-vector PDF and EPS.
Step 4
Place It on a Flat Panel
Position the code on the flattest area available, clear of seams, zips, plackets, pockets and hems, with an unbroken margin around it. Size up from the printed dimensions — fabric eats fine detail.
Step 5
Print One and Scan It Worn
Print a single garment, put it on someone, and scan it on at least two phones in the lighting where it will actually be seen. A flat proof on a table is not the test.
Step 6
Wash It, Then Scan Again
Run the sample through a few wash-and-dry cycles and re-scan. Only then commit to the run. This step costs one shirt and saves the whole batch.

QR Codes on Clothing Labels
A care label is a tiny piece of real estate carrying an ever-growing amount of required and useful information. A QR code on the label moves the overflow onto a page — and unlike the woven tag, that page can be corrected, translated and extended after the garment has shipped.
What brands put behind a label code
Full fibre composition, washing and drying instructions in several languages, repair and aftercare guidance, resale and recycling routes, and materials or sourcing detail that will never fit on a woven tag.
Why it has to be dynamic
Label stock is printed or woven in long runs, but the information behind it changes — regulations, translations, a care instruction you got slightly wrong. Update the page, not the garment.
Print it on the flat part of the tag
Labels are small and often folded. Keep the code well inside a flat area of the tag with its full margin, and remember the tag material is the code's background just as the garment is.
Authenticity checks
A code on the label can open your own product record so a buyer can check an item against it. Useful and honest — but treat it as a deterrent and a service, not proof against a determined counterfeiter.

Mistakes to avoid
Six Ways a Garment QR Code Fails
All six are avoidable before the run starts — and every one of them is unrecoverable once the garments are printed.

Printing a static code
The campaign ends, the link dies, and the shirt is now decorated with a dead square. You cannot reprint a garment — print a dynamic code and re-point it instead.

Placing it across a seam
A seam, zip, placket or pocket edge physically breaks the module grid. This is the single most common unrecoverable failure on clothing.

A dark code on a dark garment
The fabric is the background. Without a light panel behind it, there is nothing for the scanner to find. Choose a light garment or print an underbase.

Artwork crowding the quiet zone
Slogans, stripes and all-over prints pushed right up against the code steal the margin the scanner uses to lock on. Leave the border genuinely empty.

Sizing from the on-screen mock-up
A code that looks generous in a flat design file is often too small once ink has wicked into a knit. Size from the physical garment, not the artboard.

Never scanning a worn sample
Flat on a table, in good light, on your own phone is the easiest possible test. Scan it on a body, in real lighting, on two different phones — and again after a wash.
