The number
What the Fourteen Digits Actually Are
An ITF-14 is not a free-form number in a barcode. It is a GTIN-14, and every digit has a job.
The indicator digit
The first digit describes the packaging level, not the product. GS1 uses 1–8 for standard packaging configurations of the same item — an inner carton and a full case differ only here — and 9 for variable-measure trade items. A 0 means this is the base item's own number padded to 14 digits.
Prefix and item reference
The middle digits are the GS1 company prefix licensed to whoever owns the brand, followed by the item reference that identifies the product inside. The split between them varies with the length of the prefix. This generator never touches these: they come from your item master.
The check digit
The fourteenth digit is a mod-10 checksum over the first thirteen, weighting them 3 and 1 alternately and subtracting the total from the next multiple of ten. Type thirteen digits and it is worked out for you. Type fourteen and it is checked, never rewritten.
Two consequences of the fixed length are worth stating, because they are the two things that get an ITF-14 rejected before it is ever printed. First, the input takes digits only — no letters, no hyphens, and no spaces inside the number, so a GTIN pasted out of a spreadsheet as 1 540014 128876 has to have its spaces removed. Second, if you supply all fourteen digits and the last one is not the correct check digit, nothing is drawn. We do not quietly replace it: rewriting your final digit would hand you a barcode for a different case than the one on your paperwork.
An honest limit
The Bearer Bar We Do Not Draw
Look at an ITF-14 on a real shipping case and you will usually see a heavy black bar running above and below the symbol, often closing into a full rectangle around it. That is the bearer bar. This generator does not draw one. Neither, in our experience, do the other free tools — they simply do not mention it.
It matters because of how Interleaved 2 of 5 is built. Digits are encoded in pairs, one digit in the bars and the next in the spaces between them, and the stop pattern is short. A scanner beam that crosses the symbol diagonally can enter partway through, leave partway through, and still come back with a shorter number that looks perfectly valid — a partial scan. The bearer bar is the fix: a solid horizontal bar above and below the symbol means a beam on a shallow angle runs into black and the read fails, instead of succeeding with the wrong case number. On corrugated board, where flexographic ink spreads and the surface is anything but flat, that is not a theoretical risk.
What this means for a carton print run. What you download here is the bars, the quiet zones and the human-readable digits. If the job is going to press against a GS1 or ISO/IEC 16390 specification, the bearer bar has to be added in your prepress or label software, along with any bar-width reduction your printer asks for to compensate for ink spread — we draw bars at nominal width and apply no reduction. Because the SVG and PDF exports are real vector, adding a frame around the symbol is a two-minute job in Illustrator or a label editor. The one rule while you do it: the bearer bar must sit outside the ten modules of clear space on each side, not inside them.
For anything internal — a rack label, a tote, a work order, a proof of concept, a carton going nowhere near a trading partner’s scanner — the symbol as exported reads fine, and this is the fastest way to get one. For a production run of retail-bound cases, treat what we give you as the symbol, not the finished label artwork. Being told that up front is worth more than a fourteenth feature.

Not on the list, and deliberately: GS1-128. A GS1-128 opens with an FNC1 character to mark its payload as application identifiers, and our Code 128 accepts standard ASCII only, so an SSCC-18 pallet label is not something you can build here. There is also no barcode API, no Excel add-in and no font.
The parent symbology
Plain ITF: Interleaved 2 of 5, Any Even Length
ITF-14 is one fixed-length application of a broader symbology. The parent is in the format picker above as ITF (Interleaved 2 of 5), and it behaves differently in three ways that decide which one you want.
Even digits only
Interleaved 2 of 5 encodes digits two at a time — the first of each pair in the bars, the second in the spaces between them. An odd count cannot be represented at all, so the tool rejects it rather than padding a zero on for you. Up to 24 digits in this field.
No check digit at all
The symbology defines none, so nothing is calculated and nothing is verified. If your numbering scheme uses a check digit, it is part of the number you type. That is the opposite of ITF-14, where the fourteenth digit is checked every time.
Nobody else's business
Plain ITF suits internal reference numbers — rack locations, work orders, totes, a warehouse's own carton IDs. The moment a trading partner has to scan the case, you want ITF-14, because that is the number they can look up.
One thing they share: the partial-scan weakness described above is a property of Interleaved 2 of 5 itself, not of ITF-14. Plain ITF has no bearer bar convention to protect it, which is a reason to keep its symbols short, print them well, and reach for Code 128 when an internal number needs letters or a more forgiving symbology anyway.
Print geometry
Quiet Zones, Bar Width and the Size It Prints At
ITF-14 lives on corrugated board, which is the hardest common substrate to print a barcode on. Most free generators hand you a PNG at whatever size it came out and leave the rest to you.
Ten modules of clear space
Written into the exported file on each side, and derived from your chosen bar width rather than fixed — widen the bars and the quiet zone widens with them. At a realistic case size that is a centimetre or more of blank board. Do not crop it, print over it, or butt another element against it.
A bar-width floor that means something
The tool works out how wide one bar will be at your chosen print size and warns you below 0.495 mm, which is where GS1's X-dimension range for ITF-14 starts. That is roughly twice the narrowest bar a retail UPC is allowed, and the difference is the substrate.
Set the width, not a guess
Enter a target print width in millimetres, inches or pixels and the export is generated at exactly that size, so nothing has to be scaled up afterwards. The one ceiling is 10,000 pixels per side at the chosen resolution, and it caps SVG and PDF as much as PNG, because every file is measured off the same grid — about 846 mm at 300 DPI, half that at 600. The tool says so on screen when a request hits it.
SVG
Real geometry written into the file, not a traced bitmap. Opens in Illustrator, Inkscape, CAD and label software, scales without softening a bar edge, and is the right file to hand a carton printer who then adds the bearer bar.
Also true vector — the symbol is redrawn with the PDF's own drawing primitives on a page sized to the barcode, rather than embedded as a picture of one. It stays sharp at press resolution.
PNG
The raster option, at 72, 150, 300 or 600 DPI. Fine for a screen, a pick list or an office label printer; reach for SVG or PDF when the file is going to a plate.
What we do not do: we draw the symbol and export the file. Print quality on the finished case — contrast, ink spread, bar-width gain, grading against a print-quality verification standard — depends on your press, plate and board, and is not something QRKIT measures, grades or certifies. QRKIT is not a GS1 conformance or verification service, and nothing here is approved or endorsed by GS1. Scan a real printed case with the equipment that will read it before committing to a run.

About the 500-row cap. It is a browser-memory limit and nothing else — the batch is rendered on your own machine, and 500 symbols at 300 DPI is already tens of megabytes held in memory. It is the same number for everyone, no account or plan raises it, and when it bites the tool tells you exactly how many rows were left out so you can split the list and run the rest.

Step 1

Give it a target width in mm, inches or pixels, and pick 72–600 DPI for raster output. The tool reports the finished size and warns if one bar falls under 0.495 mm.

Add the bearer bar
For a production carton run, place the bearer bar and any bar-width reduction around the symbol in your prepress or label software — outside the quiet zones, never into them.
Reading one back is a different job. The stock iPhone Camera app will not decode an ITF-14 — it looks for QR and App Clip codes, not linear symbols — so pointing a phone at the carton and getting nothing back proves nothing about the print. A dedicated scanning app will read one, but the reader that matters is the warehouse handheld or fixed-mount scanner on the receiving dock, with Interleaved 2 of 5 enabled; on some units that symbology ships disabled by default precisely because of the partial-scan risk. QRKIT generates ITF-14 barcodes; it does not decode them.
