What is an EAN barcode?

EAN stands for European Article Number, though the standard outgrew the name long ago — it is the retail barcode used across Europe, Asia, Latin America, Africa and Oceania, and it is the international form of the GTIN numbering system. The common version is EAN-13: thirteen digits drawn as bars, with the same digits printed underneath so a person can read them when a scan fails. EAN-8 is the short form, eight digits, for packages with no room for a full symbol. Both are numeric only — there is no way to put a letter into either one.

How do I create an EAN-13 barcode?

Type the number into the generator at the top of this page — it already has EAN-13 selected — and the symbol is drawn in your browser as you type. Enter 12 digits and the thirteenth, the check digit, is calculated and added for you; enter all 13 and the one you supplied is verified. Then set a target print width in millimetres, inches or pixels and download PNG, SVG or PDF. Is this EAN barcode generator really free?

Yes — free, with no account. This generator does not ask you to sign in to create a code or to download the file, it adds no watermark, and it asks for no card. There is no paid barcode tier at QRKIT to upgrade to: vector export, the DPI and print-width controls, EAN-8 and bulk generation are all in the free tool. The symbols are yours to use commercially. That is worth stating plainly because it is unusual — most free EAN generators are free to preview.

What is the difference between EAN-13 and UPC-A?

Length, and geography. UPC-A is 12 digits and is the North American retail barcode; EAN-13 is 13 digits and is the international one. They are not rival systems — UPC-A is a subset of EAN-13. Put a zero in front of a 12-digit UPC-A and you have the equivalent EAN-13, which is why virtually every scanner built in the last thirty years reads both and why the two numbers refer to the same product. One trap this tool will not save you from: pasting a 12-digit UPC-A into the EAN-13 field does not convert it. The field accepts 12 or 13 digits, so your 12 are read as an EAN-13 still missing its check digit, a new digit is appended, and you get a different number. Type the leading zero yourself.

What is EAN-8, and when should I use it?

EAN-8 is the eight-digit short form, made for products whose packaging is physically too small for a full EAN-13 — chewing gum, cigarettes, sachets, small cosmetics, single confectionery bars. It prints in roughly half the width. The important thing to understand is that an EAN-8 is not a squeezed EAN-13: unlike UPC-E, which is a compressed representation of a UPC-A, an EAN-8 number is allocated separately by GS1 from its own restricted pool, precisely because the supply is small. So there is no arithmetic that turns your EAN-13 into an EAN-8, and this tool does not attempt one — it encodes the EAN-8 number you give it. Use EAN-13 whenever the package has room.

Does this calculate the EAN check digit for me?

Yes, and it verifies one you supply. The last digit of an EAN is arithmetic on the digits before it, so there is exactly one correct value. Enter 12 digits into the EAN-13 field and the thirteenth is computed and drawn; enter 7 into the EAN-8 field and the eighth is computed. Enter the full 13 or 8 and the check digit is recalculated and compared — if it does not match, no symbol is drawn at all. That refusal is the behaviour you want: a barcode with a wrong check digit prints perfectly and then fails at the checkout, which is a much more expensive way to find out.

Can I make an ISBN barcode here?

Yes, and you do it with the EAN-13 field — there is no separate ISBN entry in the format picker and there should not be one, because an ISBN-13 is an EAN-13. The 13 digits printed on a book's copyright page, the ones starting 978 or 979, are the number encoded in the barcode on its back cover. Paste them into the generator above and you get exactly that symbol. Two honest caveats. An older 10-digit ISBN has to be converted to ISBN-13 first, and this tool does not do that conversion for you. And the small extra barcode you often see beside a book or magazine EAN — the EAN-5 price add-on, or the EAN-2 issue number — is a separate symbol, it is not in our format list, and this generator does not draw it.

Do the first digits of an EAN tell you which country a product came from?

No, and this is the most persistent myth about EAN barcodes. The leading digits identify the GS1 Member Organisation that issued the company prefix — that is, where the company registered — not where the goods were designed, manufactured or assembled. A business registered in one country routinely sells products made in another under the same prefix. Treat the prefix as an administrative routing code, not as country-of-origin labelling, which is a separate legal requirement printed in words on the package.

Can I download an EAN barcode as SVG or another vector file?

Yes. SVG and PDF are both true vector here — the bars are written into the file as real geometry, not traced from an image, so the symbol stays crisp at any size and a plate-maker or label press can use it directly. The PDF page is sized to the barcode itself rather than dropped onto a letter sheet. PNG is the raster option, exported at 72, 150, 300 or 600 DPI. There is no EPS export.

Can I generate EAN barcodes in bulk?

Yes, free and with no account. Can an EAN barcode be dynamic, editable or trackable?

No. An EAN barcode is a number drawn as bars — the number is the entire content, there is no destination behind it, so there is nothing to redirect and nothing to count. Once it is printed it cannot be changed, and no barcode tool anywhere can make it otherwise. If what you want is a code you can re-point after printing and whose scans you can measure, that is a dynamic QR code: a different symbology, a different product, and unlike this barcode generator it does involve an account.

The format

What an EAN Barcode Actually Is

An EAN-13 is thirteen digits drawn as bars, plus the same thirteen digits printed underneath so a person can read them when the scan fails. It is the retail barcode of most of the world — Europe, Asia, Latin America, Africa and Oceania.

The GS1 prefix

The leading digits identify the GS1 Member Organisation that issued the company prefix — where the company registered, not where the goods were made. Treating the prefix as country-of-origin labelling is the most common misreading of an EAN, and it is wrong often enough to matter.

The company and item digits

After the prefix comes the rest of the GS1-issued company prefix and the item reference you assign under it. Where one ends and the other begins depends on how long your prefix is — that is decided by GS1, and nothing in the barcode marks the boundary.

The check digit

The last digit is arithmetic on the ones before it, so there is exactly one correct value. It is the reason a mistyped EAN usually fails at the scanner instead of quietly ringing up a different product.

The name is a fossil. EAN began as the European Article Number and the standard it sits in is now GTIN-13, administered by GS1 worldwide — the term stuck because it is what everyone still calls the symbol. Americans meet the twelve-digit UPC first and often assume EAN is the regional variant; it is the other way round, and the next section sets out the relationship exactly. The EAN-13 Barcode Generator: Lengths, Check Digit, Refusals

What follows is what this tool does, not a paraphrase of the standard. Where the two differ, the tool is what you will actually hit.

Twelve digits: we finish it

Enter 590123412345 and the generator computes the check digit and draws the completed code. The human-readable line reads 5901234123457 — the full thirteen digits, not the twelve you typed.

Thirteen digits: we check it

Supply all thirteen and the last one is recalculated and compared. If it does not match, no symbol is drawn. That is the behaviour you want: a barcode with a wrong check digit prints perfectly and fails at the till.

Eleven digits: refused

The field takes 12 or 13 and nothing else, with the message “EAN-13 requires 12 or 13 digits, with no spaces”. It also stops accepting keystrokes at 13, so a 14-digit outer-case number cannot be typed here at all — that is ITF-14, and it is a different entry in the picker.

Spaces are not cleaned up for you

Leading and trailing whitespace is trimmed, but an interior space is not. A number pasted from a spreadsheet as 590123412345 7 is rejected rather than silently repaired, because guessing at formatting is how the wrong product gets encoded.

Letters are not an EAN. EAN-13 is a numeric-only symbology — there is no way to put a letter, a hyphen or a slash into one, and a tool that appears to let you has quietly switched you to a different format. If your internal reference contains letters, you want Code 128, which is in the same picker above.

EAN-8

EAN-8: the Short Form for Small Packages

EAN-8 prints eight digits in roughly half the width of an EAN-13, which is why it turns up on chewing gum, sachets, small cosmetics and single confectionery bars — anything whose packaging genuinely cannot carry a full symbol at a scannable size.

Seven digits and the eighth is calculated for you, or all eight and the last is verified. All eight are printed under the bars in two groups of four — unlike EAN-13, nothing sits outside the symbol.

What it refuses, and why

Six digits is too short to be an EAN-8 with or without its check digit, so there is nothing to complete. And an eight-digit number whose last digit is not the correct check digit draws no symbol at all, rather than a barcode that will fail at a checkout.

An EAN-8 is not a squeezed EAN-13. This is where EAN and UPC genuinely differ, and it trips people up constantly. UPC-E isa compressed UPC-A — a scanner expands it back before doing anything with it. EAN-8 is not: it is a separately allocated number, issued by GS1 from a restricted pool precisely because eight-digit numbers are scarce, and it carries no company prefix in the usual sense. There is no arithmetic that turns your EAN-13 into an EAN-8, so no tool can derive one and this one does not try — it encodes the eight-digit number you give it. If the package has room for a full EAN-13, use one.

EAN and UPC

A UPC-A Is an EAN-13 With a Leading Zero

These are not competing standards. UPC-A is a subset of EAN-13: take a twelve-digit UPC-A, put a zero in front of it, and you have the thirteen-digit EAN-13 for the same product. That is why essentially every scanner built in the last thirty years reads both without being told which one it is looking at, and why a product sold on two continents does not need two different numbers.

The practical upshot, if you have both numbers in front of you: they are the same GTIN written at two lengths. An EAN-13 that begins with a zero isa UPC-A. An EAN-13 that begins with anything else has no UPC-A form — you cannot shorten it, and a US retailer that insists on twelve digits is asking for a number you were never issued.

The one trap in this generator

Pasting a twelve-digit UPC-A into the EAN-13 field does notconvert it. The field accepts twelve digits as an EAN-13 that is still missing its check digit, so it appends a new one — and you get a different number.

Books and magazines

Where ISBNs Fit Inside EAN-13

The 978 and 979 prefixes were set aside inside EAN-13 for publishing, which is why a 13-digit ISBN is an EAN-13 rather than something that has to be translated into one. Paste those thirteen digits into the field above and you get exactly the symbol printed on the back of the book, check digit verified. That is also why there is no separate ISBN entry in the format picker: it would draw an identical barcode under a second name.

One thing this generator will not do is convert a ten-digit ISBN. An ISBN-10 is not an EAN-13 and will not encode as one; it has to become an ISBN-13 first, and that conversion happens before you get here.

The narrow second barcode is not ours. Many book and magazine covers print a small symbol beside the main one: an EAN-5 carrying the recommended price, or an EAN-2 carrying an issue number. Those are separate add-on symbols, they are not in our format list, and this generator does not draw them. If a printer’s specification calls for a price add-on you will need a dedicated tool for that part.

Set the width, not a guess

Enter a target print width in millimetres, inches or pixels and the export is generated at exactly that size. The one ceiling is 10,000 pixels per side — just under 847 mm at 300 DPI — and the tool says so on screen if a request runs into it.

The 80% magnification floor

GS1 caps retail EAN symbols at 80% magnification, where one bar is 0.264 mm wide. The tool works out your bar width live and warns the moment it drops below that — which is the number a shrunk-to-fit label lives or dies on.

Quiet zones included

Eleven modules of clear space on the left of an EAN-13 and seven on the right; seven and seven for an EAN-8. The asymmetry is in the GS1 specification, not a rendering quirk, and it is drawn into the exported file. Do not crop it away in your layout.

What we do not do: we draw the symbol and export the file. Print quality on the finished package — contrast, ink spread on absorbent stock, grading against a print-verification standard — depends on your printer and substrate, and is not something QRKIT measures, grades or certifies. The leading digits identify the GS1 Member Organisation that issued the company prefix — that is, where the company registered — not where the goods were designed, manufactured or assembled. A business registered in one country routinely sells products made in another under the same prefix. Treat the prefix as an administrative routing code, not as country-of-origin labelling, which is a separate legal requirement printed in words on the package.

SVG and PDF are both true vector here — the bars are written into the file as real geometry, not traced from an image, so the symbol stays crisp at any size and a plate-maker or label press can use it directly. The PDF page is sized to the barcode itself rather than dropped onto a letter sheet. PNG is the raster option, exported at 72, 150, 300 or 600 DPI. There is no EPS export. : No. An EAN barcode is a number drawn as bars — the number is the entire content, there is no destination behind it, so there is nothing to redirect and nothing to count. Once it is printed it cannot be changed, and no barcode tool anywhere can make it otherwise. If what you want is a code you can re-point after printing and whose scans you can measure, that is a dynamic QR code: a different symbology, a different product, and unlike this barcode generator it does involve an account.
