Spotify QR Code: Spotify Codes vs Standard QR — Which Is Better?

Spotify Codes only work inside the Spotify app. A standard QR code works with any phone camera, can be customized, and tracks scans — free, no sign-up.

Spotify Codes: How They Work

Spotify Codes are a proprietary barcode-like format introduced in 2017. They appear as a series of dots and bars beneath album art — not standard QR codes. Here's how to find yours.

How to get your Spotify Code

  1. 1Open the Spotify app on your phone
  2. 2Navigate to any song, playlist, album, or podcast
  3. 3Tap the three dots (…) and select “Share”
  4. 4The Spotify Code appears at the bottom of the share screen with the album art
  5. 5Screenshot or share the code directly

Scanning a Spotify Code: Open the Spotify app, tap Search, then tap the camera icon in the search bar. Point your phone at a Spotify Code — the content plays automatically. This only works within the Spotify app.

History and adoption: Spotify introduced Codes in 2017 through a partnership with Spotify for Artists, giving musicians a visual way to share tracks and profiles. The format uses a series of vertical bars at varying heights — visually distinct from QR codes but functionally limited. Unlike standard QR codes, Spotify Codes can't be read by phone cameras, Google Lens, or third-party QR scanner apps. They don't work offline, can't be printed at small sizes reliably (the bar pattern degrades below 3 cm width), and provide zero analytics — you can't see how many people scanned your Code or where they scanned it.

Spotify Code limitations

Spotify Codes can only be scanned inside the Spotify app — phone cameras, Google Lens, and QR reader apps can't read them. No customization (fixed barcode format tied to album art), no scan tracking, no branding, and you can't change the destination after sharing. The recipient must have Spotify installed. For universal scanning and custom branding, create a standard QR code above.

Custom QR code

How to Create a Standard QR Code for Spotify

1

Copy Your Spotify Link

Open Spotify, navigate to any song, playlist, album, artist page, or podcast. Tap the three dots (…), select “Share,” and tap “Copy link.”

2

Open QRKIT's Generator

Use the Spotify QR Code Generator above. It accepts any Spotify URL — songs, playlists, albums, artist pages, podcasts, and episodes.

3

Paste the Spotify URL

Paste your link. Supported formats: open.spotify.com/track/[ID], open.spotify.com/playlist/[ID], open.spotify.com/album/[ID], open.spotify.com/artist/[ID], open.spotify.com/show/[ID].

4

Customize Your Design

Add the Spotify icon or your own logo. Use Spotify green (#1DB954) as the accent color. Pick a frame with CTA text like “Scan to Listen.”

5

Download & Test

Download as PNG for digital use or SVG/PDF for print materials. Test on both iPhone and Android — with Spotify installed and without (to verify web player fallback).

Why standard QR beats Spotify Codes: Works with any phone camera (not just the Spotify app), full branding (your logo and colors), scan tracking and analytics, dynamic QR codes (update the destination without reprinting), and print-ready formats (SVG, PDF). Non-Spotify users see the web player instead.

Pro tip: static vs dynamic

Use a static QR code for permanent content like an album page or artist profile — the link is baked into the code and never expires. Use a dynamic QR code for playlists you'll update, seasonal campaigns, or rotating content — you can change the destination URL anytime without reprinting. For podcast promotion, link to the show page rather than a single episode for long-term value. Need full design control? Try the custom QR code generator for advanced branding options.

Comparison

Spotify Codes vs Standard QR Codes

Spotify Codes look different from QR codes and work differently. Here's a side-by-side comparison.

Spotify Codes

Limited

Barcode-like format tied to Spotify content. Only scannable within the Spotify app. Fixed design, no analytics.

  • In-app sharing
  • Recognizable Spotify format
  • Free
  • Any phone camera
  • Custom colors & logo
  • Scan tracking & analytics
  • Editable destination
  • Works without Spotify app
  • Print-ready download (SVG/PDF)

QRKIT Custom

Recommended

Standard QR code for any Spotify content. Full branding, tracking, and universal scanning from any device.

  • In-app sharing
  • Songs, playlists, albums & podcasts
  • Any phone camera
  • Custom colors & logo
  • Scan tracking & analytics
  • Editable destination
  • Works without Spotify app
  • Print-ready download (SVG/PDF)
  • Free

Our recommendation: Use Spotify Codes for quick in-app sharing between Spotify users — they're built into the app and play content instantly. Use a standard QR code for print materials, gifts, events, marketing, or any situation where the scanner might not have the Spotify app open.

Use cases

8 Creative Ways to Use Your Spotify QR Code

Album & Single Releases

Print QR codes on posters, flyers, and merchandise linking directly to your new release. Fans scan with any phone camera — no need to search or type. See also: Instagram QR Code, TikTok QR Code, Facebook QR Code, Snapchat QR Code, WhatsApp QR Code, and YouTube QR Code.

Content types

QR Codes for Playlists, Songs & Podcasts

Playlists

The most popular use case. Copy the playlist share link and paste it into QRKIT. Works for collaborative playlists too. A dynamic QR code lets you update the playlist without changing the printed code — ideal for venues and events. Collaborative playlists let guests add their own songs, making them perfect for parties and wedding receptions.

Individual Songs

Link to a specific track — great for musicians promoting a new single. The link opens in the Spotify app if installed, or in the Spotify web player if it's not. Use the open.spotify.com/track/[ID] format for maximum compatibility across devices.

Albums

Full album link for release campaigns. Print QR codes on posters, CD inserts, vinyl sleeves, or press kits linking directly to the album page on Spotify. Static QR codes are ideal here since album URLs are permanent and never expire.

Podcasts & Episodes

Link to a show page (all episodes) or a specific episode. Growing use case for podcast promotion on business cards, flyers, and social media profiles. For ongoing promotion, link to the show page so listeners always see the latest episodes.

Artist Profiles

Link to an artist page to grow followers. Best for musicians and bands. Fans scan to see your full discography, upcoming releases, and concert dates on Spotify. Print on merch, backstage passes, and concert posters to convert live audiences into streaming followers.

URL tip: Always use the “open.spotify.com” format (not the “spotify:track:…” URI) for maximum compatibility. The open.spotify.com link works in both the app and the web player. Want scan tracking and analytics? Use a dynamic QR code.

Scanning

How to Scan a Spotify QR Code

Standard QR codes (phone camera): Point your iPhone or Android camera at the QR code. Tap the notification that appears. The link opens in the Spotify app if installed, or in the Spotify web player in your browser. Any QR reader app or Google Lens also works.

Spotify Codes (Spotify app only): Open the Spotify app, tap Search, then tap the camera icon in the search bar. Point your phone at the Spotify Code — the barcode-like image with dots and bars. The content plays automatically. This only works within the Spotify app.

Google Lens: Open Google Lens (built into Google Camera or Google Photos on Android, or via the Google app on iOS). Point at any standard QR code to scan it. Google Lens cannot read Spotify Codes.

Spotify QR code login: Spotify's TV and desktop apps show a QR code on the login screen. Open Spotify on your phone, scan the code, and you're signed in. This is a login feature, not related to sharing music.

Device-specific scanning tips

iPhone (iOS 11+): Open the Camera app and point at the QR code. A notification banner appears at the top — tap it to open in Spotify or Safari. No third-party app needed.

Android: Most Android phones (2018+) scan QR codes directly from the camera. If yours doesn't, open Google Lens from the Google app or Google Photos. Samsung devices also have a built-in QR scanner in Quick Settings.

QR code not scanning?

For standard QR codes: check lighting, hold your phone steady, and make sure the code is at least 2 × 2 cm. Avoid reflective surfaces that create glare, and ensure the code isn't warped, damaged, or partially covered. For Spotify Codes: you must use the Spotify app's built-in camera (Search → camera icon) — regular phone cameras and QR reader apps cannot read them. If the code is from a screenshot, ensure the image is clear and uncropped. If scanning still fails, try increasing screen brightness or printing at a larger size.

Best practices

Spotify QR Code Design Tips

01

Use Spotify Green (#1DB954)

Use Spotify's iconic green (#1DB954) as the QR code accent color. Keep the background white for maximum contrast and instant brand recognition. Avoid inverting colors (light on dark) — most phone cameras need a dark pattern on a light background to scan reliably.

02

Add Album Art or Logo

Upload the Spotify icon, album artwork, or your own logo in QRKIT's customization panel. Visual context helps people know what they're scanning. Keep the logo centered and under 30% of the QR code area to avoid breaking scannability.

03

Print at the Right Size

Minimum: 2 × 2 cm. Business cards: 2–3 cm. Posters: 8–12 cm. Rule of thumb: 10:1 scan distance ratio — a 3 cm code scans from 30 cm away.

04

Test Before Printing

Test on both iPhone and Android. Test with Spotify installed (opens in app) and without (should open the web player). A standard QR code should work with both.

05

Use Dynamic QR Codes

For playlists you'll update, use a dynamic QR code. Change the linked content without reprinting — perfect for venues, seasonal playlists, and gift codes.

06

Add a Call-to-Action

Add “Scan to Listen,” “Hear Our Playlist,” or “Listen on Spotify” text around the QR code. A bare code with no context gets ignored.

07

Download High-Resolution

SVG or PDF for print — vector format, scales infinitely without blurring. PNG for digital use: social media posts, email signatures, and web pages. For best results, download at the highest resolution available and let your design tool handle the resizing.
