What Is a QR Code?

A QR code (Quick Response code) is a two-dimensional barcode that stores data in a grid of black-and-white squares. Originally invented in 1994 by Denso Wave for tracking auto parts (defined by the ISO/IEC 18004 standard), QR codes are now everywhere — on product packaging, signage, event tickets, business cards, and advertisements. Any smartphone camera can read them instantly.

QR codes can encode many types of data: website URLs, WiFi credentials, contact information, payment details, calendar events, and more. When you scan one, your phone reads the encoded data and performs the appropriate action — usually opening a link in your browser.

There are two kinds of QR codes. Static QR codes have fixed content that can never change after creation. Dynamic QR codes use a short redirect URL, so the destination can be updated anytime and every scan is tracked with analytics data like location, device, and time.

Modern QR codes use Reed-Solomon error correction, which means they can still be scanned even if part of the code is damaged or obscured. This is why you can add a logo to the center of a QR code and it still works. Error correction levels range from Low (7% recovery) to High (30% recovery). For printed materials like stickers and labels, a generous error-correction budget matters — every QRKIT code is generated at level Q (~25% recovery), so print it large enough to use that budget. iPhone

How to Scan a QR Code on iPhone

iPhones have read QR codes natively from the Camera app since iOS 11 (2017), on every model from the iPhone 5s onward. No additional app is needed. Here's the fastest method.

Using the Camera App (Fastest Method)

Step 1: Open the Camera app on your iPhone.

Step 2: Point your camera at the QR code so it fills most of the frame. Hold the phone 6–10 inches away and keep it steady.

Step 3: A yellow notification banner will appear at the top of the screen. Tap it to open the link.

Tip: If nothing happens, go to Settings > Camera and make sure Scan QR Codes is toggled on (see Apple's support article). This setting is enabled by default but may have been turned off.

Android

Scanning on Android — the Short Version

On most current Android phones there is nothing to install, but the exact route varies by manufacturer. There are four built-in options: a Scan QR code tile in Quick Settings (swipe down from the top — with two fingers on a Samsung Galaxy), your camera app, Circle to Search for a code already on your screen, and Google Lens.

If your camera seems to ignore codes, it is almost always a setting rather than a fault: on a Pixel it is Settings > More settings > Camera scan suggestions, and on a Samsung Galaxy it is Scan QR codes in the Camera app's own settings. Both need to be on.

How to Scan a QR Code on a Computer or Laptop

Two desktop systems come close to a phone's point-and-go scan: Windows 11's Camera app has a Barcode mode, and the Chromebook Camera app has a Scan mode with a QR code option — but both read only what the webcam can see live. On a Mac there is no built-in scanner at all. What you use instead depends on one question: where the code actually is. If it is on paper, on a product, or on another screen, a webcam can read it. If it is in a file, in an email, or on the display you are looking at right now, a camera is the wrong tool entirely — you screenshot it and decode the image in your browser.

Both routes work on any laptop or desktop, and neither needs your phone or a downloaded app.

Online Scanner (Easiest, No Camera)

On Mac

Apple documents no built-in QR reader for macOS. Live Text in Preview and Quick Look acts on phone numbers, email addresses and website links it finds in an image, but Apple's own documentation does not list QR codes among them. There is no Mac equivalent of the iPhone Camera's scan, so use a browser-based scanner: screenshot the code or open the saved file, and decode it in the browser.

On Windows

Windows 11's Camera app has a Barcode mode that reads QR codes: open Camera, select Barcode on the right, and hold the code in front of the webcam — Microsoft documents the link appearing at the bottom of the window. If your Camera app has no Barcode button, use a browser-based scanner instead. Barcode mode only reads what the camera can see live. For a code already saved as a file or sitting on your screen, Windows 11's Snipping Tool can surface the link through Text Actions after you snip it — though it only works on what you just snipped, and it has come and gone between builds. A browser-based scanner handles any saved image or PDF.

On Chromebook

ChromeOS has a built-in scanner. Google documents it in the Camera app: open Camera, select Scan and then QR code at the bottom, position the code in the viewfinder, and tap the text or URL that appears. Like every webcam route it only reads a code held up in front of the lens, so for a code already saved as a file — or shown on the Chromebook's own screen — use a browser-based scanner instead.

How do I scan a QR code with my laptop?

A laptop gives you two hardware paths, and picking the wrong one is why most people conclude it cannot be done. Use the webcam when the code exists somewhere outside your laptop — printed on a letter, on packaging, on a phone someone is holding up. Open a browser-based scanner, allow camera access, and hold the code steady in front of the lens in even light, close enough that it stays in focus and fills a good part of the frame. On Windows 11 you can use the Camera app's Barcode mode instead, and on a Chromebook the Camera app's Scan > QR code mode; on a Mac the browser is the route.

Use an image upload whenever the code is already a file on the machine — a PDF invoice, an email attachment, a saved photo, a screenshot. No camera is involved, so this also covers desktop towers and any laptop whose webcam is broken, covered, or disabled by policy.

How can I scan a QR code on my computer screen?

This is the case webcams cannot solve. Your laptop's built-in camera points outward at your face — it has no view of your own display, so it can never see a code shown in a browser tab, a video call, or a banking prompt on that same screen. Angling an external webcam back at the monitor works but fights glare and refresh flicker.

Capture the code instead. On Windows press Win + Shift + S to snip the area; on a Mac press Cmd + Shift + 4 and drag over it. Both put the image on your clipboard, so you can paste it straight into a browser-based scanner with Ctrl + V or Cmd + V — no file ever has to be saved. Include the pale margin around the code when you drag; cropping tight to the black edge removes the quiet zone a decoder needs.

How do I scan a QR code on my computer without my phone?

Every method above is phone-free. Screenshot and paste, or drag a saved image or PDF into the scanner, and the code is decoded by your browser — the contents appear as text you can copy, so you can read a link before deciding whether to open it. That inspection step is genuinely safer than pointing a phone at an unknown code, which tends to open the destination immediately.

How to Scan a QR Code Without an App

Good news: you almost certainly do not need to download a QR code scanner app. Modern smartphones have QR scanning built directly into the camera. Here are the methods that work without installing anything:

The built-in scanning capability covers the vast majority of use cases. Where it differs is Android, where the exact route depends on the manufacturer — Google documents that the QR mode in Camera from Google is available only on selected devices, and both Pixel and Samsung Galaxy phones put camera QR detection behind a setting that can be switched off. Be cautious about QR scanner apps. Many third-party QR scanner apps in the App Store and Play Store are unnecessary and may contain ads, trackers, or even malware. If someone tells you to download a QR code scanner app, it's almost certainly not needed — your phone's camera already does it.

If your phone isn't reading a QR code, work through these common fixes. Most scanning problems are solved in under a minute.

Hold It 6–10 Inches Away

Hold your phone 6-10 inches away from the QR code. Tap the screen to focus if the image is blurry. Keep the phone steady for a moment.

Improve Lighting

Move to a well-lit area. Avoid direct sunlight or overhead lights that cause glare on the QR code surface. Even, indirect light works best.

Clean Your Camera Lens

Smudges and fingerprints are the most common hidden cause of scanning failures. Wipe your camera lens with a soft cloth before scanning.

Check for Damage

Torn, faded, or partially covered QR codes may not scan. If you created the code, reprint it larger and on a cleaner surface — that buys back more scan reliability than anything else.

Update Your Phone

Older OS versions may have limited QR scanning support. Update to the latest iOS or Android version for the best scanning experience.
